How to resolve error messages when trying to save a new 301 redirect.
If you're unable to create a new 301 URL redirect because of an error message, read on to learn what these error messages mean and how to resolve them.
If you've been able to save your redirect but it's not working when visited, learn how to resolve this.
"Redirect from" has already been taken
This means the 'Redirect from' URL is already being redirected.
Try editing or deleting the existing redirect on the URL Redirects page.
"Redirect to" can't redirect to another redirect
This means Shopify does not allow 'chaining' of redirects. This means broken link 'A' cannot be redirected to broken link 'B' if 'B' is already being redirected to an active page, 'C'.
In this context, try redirecting broken link 'A' to active page 'C'.
Cannot create a redirect for a Shopify system page
Shopify has certain pages (like checkout or account pages) that are system-controlled, and you can't create redirects for these URLs.
You can't redirect URLs that begin with the following prefixes: /apps
, /application
, /cart
, /carts
, /orders
, or /services
.
You can't redirect URLs that use fixed Shopify paths: /products
, /collections
, /collections/all
.
"Redirect to" can't be the same as
"Redirect from"
This means a broken link can't be redirected to itself.
Try changing either the 'Redirect from' or 'Redirect to' URLs.
Redirects limit reached
If you try to create a new URL redirect and have reached the maximum limit of 100,000 redirects, Shopify won’t allow you to add more. However, Shopify may not display a specific error message about this. Instead, when attempting to upload more redirects through a bulk import or manually, the system will simply not process additional redirects beyond the limit.
Try deleting some old or unused redirects.
