Managing broken links

How to effectively manage your incoming broken links.

Managing broken links

It's important to stay on top of the broken links Redirect Pro detects, so you can redirect the ones that matter most, quick and early.

Redirect Pro only detects 404 broken links after they're visited, rather than through a web crawl. This is to ensure the broken links that appear in the app are of the highest relevance, as they are disrupting genuine customer journeys.

If you've tried visiting a test broken link and it's not appearing in the Broken Links page, learn why this might be the case.

Viewing detected broken links

Redirect Pro will give you a summary of broken links it's detected, as well as the number of visits for each broken link so you can prioritise redirecting the ones that have been impacting customer journeys the most.

Newly detected broken links will appear in the Unresolved table, on the Broken Links page in Redirect Pro.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Broken Links page.

Redirecting broken links

You can create a 301 redirect for a broken link from either the Unresolved or Hidden table on the Broken Links page in Redirect Pro.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Broken Links page.
  3. Select one or more broken links in the table.
  4. Click Create redirect.
  5. Enter a Redirect to URL.
  6. Click Redirect.
  7. Your redirect will appear in the URL Redirects page.

If you redirect several broken links at once, it may take a while for them to be processed. They'll appear on the URL Redirects page when complete.

Errors when redirecting broken links

If you see a 'Sorry, it looks like something went wrong' message when trying to redirect a broken link, it's likely this broken link has already been redirected outside of the broken links page.

Visit the URL Redirects page and search for the URL. If you find an existing redirect for the broken link, you can delete it from the table of Broken Links.

Hiding and unhiding broken links

You can move broken links which are less relevant or have very few visits from the Unresolved table to the Hidden table.

This allows you to keep an eye on them in case the visits increase in future.

Steps for hiding broken links:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Broken Links page.
  3. Click Unresolved.
  4. Select one or more broken links in the table.
  5. Click Hide.

Steps for unhiding broken links:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Broken Links page.
  3. Click Hidden.
  4. Select one or more broken links in the table.
  5. Click Unhide.

Deleting broken links

If a broken link is irrelevant or has very few visits, you can delete it from either the Unresolved or Hidden table on the Broken Links page in Redirect Pro.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Broken Links page.
  3. Select one or more broken links in the table.
  4. Click Delete.
  5. On the confirmation modal, Click Delete.

If you delete a broken link, it will only reappear in the table of Broken Links if it's visited again.

If a broken link gets a lot of visits but you don't want to redirect it, we recommend hiding it instead of deleting it.
