Managing automatic redirects

Enabling and editing automatic redirects to redirect visitors to relevant pages.

Managing automatic redirects

Automatic redirects use a Javascript-based redirect in the browser to redirect visitors from any broken links that match one of five given URL structures to single destination URLs instantly.

Visits to automatic redirects use up your plan allowance. Learn more about usage allowances and changing your plan.

If a detected broken link matches a pattern redirect and an automatic redirect, the pattern redirect will take priority in creating a URL redirect for the broken link. Similarly, an individual 301 redirect will take priority over both automatic and pattern redirects.

Editing automatic redirects

Each automatic redirect diverts website visitors from all broken URLs that match a given URL structure to a single destination URL. For example, the /products/* automatic redirect will redirect anyone visiting a broken product page link to your chosen destination URL.

Steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, open Redirect Pro.
  2. Open the Automatic Redirects page.
  3. Identify the automatic redirect you'd like to edit.
  4. Click Deactivate.
  5. Edit a destination URL.
  6. Click Activate.

Fully customised automatic redirects

Pattern redirects are a more advanced version of automatic redirects. These allow you to automatically divert website visitors from all broken URLs that match a completely custom URL structure to a single destination URL, or to different URLs based on a new structure.
